Regardless of which fruit you like best, you must agree that most of them are like nature’s desserts. They are tasty, delicious treats which are packed with vitamins and antioxidants which help to keep us in good working order. Of all the fruits, blueberries are one f the richest with regard to antioxidant properties, and are highly regarded in both medical and holistic circles.
Growing what you can to guarantee that you have fresh produce which are free from chemicals is also one way to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle, which focuses on using less, producing less waste, and vegetable and fruit gardening, where possible. Blueberry bushes are easy to grow and can be the perfect addition to your fruit and vegetable garden. If growing your own bush isn’t an option there are also “pick your own” farms which allow you to pick the fruits you wish to purchase.
These treats are however available for only a short time during the year and because of their delicate nature, many homemakers find it difficult to preserve them and are disappointed when they are removed from the freezer and may not be as you would like.
The problem is we tend to pick what we can and then place it in a single container and freeze it, but forget that unless we plan to use the whole batch at once, but then you’ll have to defrost t he whole batch in order to use any of them, resulting in possible spoilage and damaged fruits.
Blueberries should be gently washed and dried with paper towel, and should be frozen in shallow containers such as baking sheets. Once these sheets of berries are frozen, they can be placed together in other storage containers. These can last up to a year especially if vacuum frozen.
These delicious fruits can be used in a variety of ways once stored, including in frozen treats, breakfast cereals, muffins or crumble or to make a healthy smoothie or they can be simply eaten as is to help cool down the kids during those hot summer months.
